Which AI to use & when: A deep dive

Hello & welcome to another mid-week deep dive!

It took me 2 days of procrastination, 4 hours of research, a little dose of caffeine and a need to drag my butt to WeWork to get this done!

Today, we're diving into the Thunderdome of AI chatbots. It's Claude vs. Hugging Chat vs. ChatGPT vs. Poe vs. Perplexity in a no-holds-barred battle for your keyboard time.

Basically, this is the cheat sheet for which AI is the best for which tasks!

1. ChatGPT: The OG Rockstar šŸŽø

digitalSamaritanā€™s Take: It's like having a really smart friend who never sleeps and doesn't judge you for asking the same question 50 times.

When to use it: When you want a solid all-rounder that won't disappoint you. Quick brainstorming, planning a vacation, co-ordinating an outfit, etc.

The good:

  • It's like the Swiss Army knife of AI - does a bit of everything well

  • Huge knowledge base, so it can chat about almost anything.

  • A huge library of pre-built GPTs built by community & third party app integration like Whimsical for diagrams or Zapier for automation

  • Free plan is generous. You can use pre-built GPTs even on the free plan

  • It is one of the best models out there for software engineers for some AI assistance

  • It is multimodal. You can upload images, PDFs, etc and ask questions

  • The voice mode will be rolled out to everyone soon so basically Siri on steroids

The bad:

  • Itā€™s terrible for writing unless you prefer robotic writing

  • You need good prompts to get good results (Cue: try prompt-genie)

  • Itā€™s terrible at all things math. Canā€™t reason too well

  • Cannot build your custom GPTs on the free plan

2. Claude: The Overachiever šŸ¤“

digitalSamaritanā€™s Take: It's like ChatGPT went to Harvard, then did a Ph.D., and came back speaking 5 languages.

When to use it: When you need that extra bit of smarts or handling more complex tasks or writing tasks.

The good:

  • In my humble opinion, it is the best LLM out there for all things writing. I use it extensively for copywriting and brainstorming script ideas

  • You can write complex code and visualize it in the interactive window. See the results for a game with a 1 line prompt. ā€œcan you create a space invader game in Htmlā€

The bad:

  • You can run out of messages on the free plan quickly. I ended up upgrading to the paid plan. (also means results are really good)

  • The code generated needs to be exported. The libraries used in the code often result in compatibility issues.

  • Canā€™t build your custom bots. I wish I could turn my chats into a pre-trained bot so I can re-use it over and over again

3. Hugging Chat: The Open-Source Underdog šŸ¶

digitalSamaritanā€™s Take: If ChatGPT is like an iPhone, HuggingChat is like an Android

When to use it: When you're feeling rebellious against the big tech overlords or just want to try out newer models

The good:

  • It is just like ChatGPT but free & open sourced

  • Access to all the latest open-sourced models including the latest Llama 3.1 by Meta.

  • You can build custom assistants with a system prompt, model of your choice, your custom knowledge base and access to the internet.

  • Thereā€™s a library of pre-built AI assistants built by the community

  • Newer open-sourced models are added all the time!

The bad:

  • Unlike ChatGPT, thereā€™s no integration with 3rd party app integration.

4. Poe: The Buffet of Bots šŸ½ļø

digitalSamaritanā€™s Take: It's like going to an AI food court. Can't decide? Try a little bit of everything!

When to use it: When you're feeling indecisive or want to comparison-shop your AI.

The good:

  • All the AI models including chat and image in the single interface including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Dall.E etc.

  • You can compare results provided by different prompts

  • The library of pre-built AI bots is comprehensive and easy to filter

  • You can build your own bot using ANY model

  • You can make money with your custom bots. Poe might be the only one which has enabled creator monetization.

The bad:

  • The interface can be overwhelming

  • The message limit can be limited so youā€™d have to upgrade to the paid plan for extensive use

5. Perplexity: The Know-It-All Newbie šŸ”

digitalSamaritanā€™s Take: It's like having a librarian, a journalist, and a know-it-all friend all rolled into one AI package. Use this when you want to sound smart at dinner parties or win Twitter arguments

When to use it: When you want up-to-the-minute info or need to fact-check like a boss.

The good:

  • Real-time web search capabilities. It's like if Google and ChatGPT had a genius baby.

  • Cites its sources, so you can actually check where the info is coming from.

  • Great for current events, trending topics, or when you need the latest scoop.

  • You can ask PDF a question in the free plan

The bad:

  • the annoying pop-up to install the phone app when I use it in my phone browser

  • it doesnā€™t feel like a chat experience as it forgets the context pretty quicky

The Bottom Line

Look, at the end of the day, these AI chatbots are like smartphones. They all make calls (or in this case, chat), but each has its flavor.

- ChatGPT is your reliable iPhone.

- Claude is the Android flagship with all the bells and whistles.

- Hugging Chat is that custom ROM for tech geeks.

- Poe is like carrying all the phones at once (weird flex, but okay)

- Perplexity is like Google with AI that actually works

My advice? Try 'em all. See which one gets your brain juices flowing. And remember, the best AI chatbot is the one that doesn't make you want to throw your computer out the window.

Now go forth and chat with the machines. Just don't forget to talk to real humans occasionally too. They miss you.
